  1. the base Civic Sedan can not at all touch the base Mazda 3 I've driven for 8 years now…driven very enthusiatically with oversized sticky summer tires I average over 30mpg city and 35 to 39 mpg on the highway…our gallons are bigger here though..and I would have to cruise at low speed in top gear to get 40. So both 3 and civic have low weight but the 3 has almost 150hp and and close to 35-40hp advantage

  2. The Mazda also does a lot better than advertised in the "real world". You can get a lot more than 40 MPG on the highway with these under the right conditions. I've been using Fuelly.com for a couple years and it's a great site that can show you the difference between EPA's "estimates" and the real world, where the Civic and Mazda3 smoke the Elantra and Corolla (bear in mind that the averages for the Mazda3 and Elantra include their heavier, less aerodynamic hatchback versions)

  3. Other competitors cars can reach 40mpg but most of them strip down the car to make it lighter and have a smaller engine to achieve that. Compare a Mazda3 to the Ford Fiesta. Both get same exact mileage. Fiesta weighs in at 2400lbs while Mazda3 weighs in at 3000+lbs. Fiesta smaller car while Mazda3 more room in the back seats. Fiesta has 1.6L 120HP while Mazda3 has 2.0L 155HP. Pretty amazed when I compared these myself on how good SkyActiv was.

  4. Nissan calls it "PureDrive', Mercedes calls it "Blutec", Mazda's "Skyactiv". All the same philosophy. A combination of advanced technologies aimed at better economy for fuel engine cars.

  5. Not gonna happen anytime time soon. The 4-2-1 exhaust system complicates the addition of a turbo, especially since any backup could lead to temperature increases and consequently knocking.

I wish they'd go for a 6 cylinder version for bigger vehicles like the CX-9.

  6. For past 40 years it was only mazda kept researching on rotary engines. Some people laugh at them but I think its the only car company doing something for human kind with their research. Meantime I get much sporty and comfort experience from a mazda as much as same as a expensive euro car.

  7. The evaporation of the fuel cools the compressed air (phase-change absorbs a lot of energy). By using a multi-orifice or multi-fan injector, more mixture swirl is promoted, which causes the whole compressed volume to have a lower temperature in an effort to eliminate the hot-spots that would cause knock, also known as preignition and detonation.
