In this tutorial you are going to learn how to add non Steam games to Steam which is very easy thanks to the flexibility of the Steam platform.

Step # 1 — Finding the Programs that can be Added to Steam

Start Steam and make sure that you are in the “Library” tab. In the main menu at the top of the screen click “Games” and in the menu that appears click “Add a non-Steam game to my library”. The “Add a Game” window will appear and it will build a list of programs on your computer that can be added to Steam.

Step # 2 — Adding the Game to Steam

Go through this list and find the program that you want to add to Steam. Click the checkbox to the left of the programs name and then click the “Add selected programs” button at the bottom of the window. Instantly the program will be added to the list of games on the left.

Step # 3 — Testing the Game

To make sure that the process has worked simply click on the game in the left menu and its details will appear on the right. Click the “Play” button and the game should begin just as it normally would. That is the simple process to follow for adding non Steam games to Steam.

  1. Now if only Steam programming would allow the user to add a game from network drive…. Playing The Sims (2000 game) from my home server tonight over network and it will not allow me to add Sims shortcut, only the .exe. Oh well…

  2. Does adding a non-steam game into Steam change game’s physical location on your HDD? Like all true Steam games are kept in Steam… something… Common path, but non-steam games are kept under their own paths. I fear adding them to Steam will make registry entires to gone crazy and make games unlaunchable. Not to mention their own original shortcuts – location’s changed and bang! You cannot run it , cos’ the location on HDD is different. That would suck greatly. Can somebody explain?

  3. Not that it really matters. When playing and using programs like GMod and Source Filmmaker, I am still required to actually own the programs via Steam in order to use them in-game for GMod and Source Filmmaker.
