I think Pearl was fine with not being appointed the leader of the Crystal Gems because she's more comfortable with being told what to do instead of telling others what to do.
Well technically perl had insecurities even back then so she would probably not want all the responsibilities

I only just stumbled across this show and this channel (love both by the way) and maybe it comes from binge watching all four seasons but I can imagine that no one really told Garnet to be the leader. Pearl is a great fighter, a knowledgable teacher, and a loving care giver but anytime we get a glimpse of the old days we see her deferring to Rose Quartz. Pearl, despite how far she’s come, is still a Pearl and that streak of subservience is hard to break. I imagine that when Rose left there was the question of “What do we do?” And it was Garnet who inevitably said “What we’ve always done; try to protect the world.”

Even when Rose was still around, Garnet seemed to be the second-in-command over Pearl. For example, Pearl was rather bewildered and unsure of what to do about Greg when he first went to the Crystal Temple to find Rose; when Garnet arrived she said curtly that she'd just throw Greg back over the fence, which Pearl thought was an excellent idea.
The leader in an informal setting is the one the others defer to, whose word is considered the final one on the subject. To me, Garnet has always been that "leader".
There is no question, Pearl and Amethyst decided to make Garnet the leader, Pearl did it by omission because she could only see Rose as the leader, and Amethyst did it directly because she knows she is not cut out to be a leader and she would never appoint someone as uptight as Pearl as a leader.
Who is watching this without socks on?
leadership is really dangerous with the Diamonds because of how evil and heartless and cold and un-feeling they are! like all the spiteful things they do! killing other beings and animals who're weaker and more natural off the planets just to take it over! caging humans in a zoo like prisoners! threatening to kill and shatter their own subjects for being deformed and off-colored! corrupting their own subjects with corruption! and purposely destroying a planet with the cluster! even if it's some one else's home and just don't care about how humans ! ! ! ! !

maybe pearl was originally chosen by rose to become the leader. but then pearl lashed out at rose and Greg when she was making the choice. so because pearl acted this why rose decided for garnet to be leader.
I really think that rose truly appointed garnet. pearl was to close to rose. and she needed someone new, something else that would pissed off home world

Pearl basically says why she's not in charge. She's a Pearl. She needs someone to tell her what to do.

First rule of being a good leader is to be a good follower. You can't lead without being able to follow first.
there actually is an episode (forgot which one) that explains that, 1: there is no real official leader of the crystal gems now that rose is gone. and 2: Garnet is considered the closest thing to thier leader now because she has future vision and can tell them what the missions are.
As much I like pearl. There are times pearl can be arrogant at time. Such as she keeps saying I know rose quartz better then you. There are times pearl be littler Steven at times she saids he's not needed. Pearl is awesome don't get me wrong but I still find her to be more arrogant the most. While garnet is more calm and keeps her feeling in check. Once and a while she'll have alittle fun but otherwise garnet fits the leader role perfectly. Like Optimus prime
You totally called the tensions rising because the gems don't reveal everything to Steven.
Funny you say what did at the very end. The new episodes "bomb" actually have him getting annoyed about they're lack of information they give him.
